In 2023, 110 Black U.S. Army soldiers charged with murder and mutiny in the 1917 'Houston Riot' were granted clemency and honorable discharges. Of these soldiers, 19 were executed and we invite you to remember and honor these Veterans virtually.

Watch: VA NCA commemorative event at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

VA held a ceremony on February 22 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery unveiling new headstones for 17 Black U.S. Army soldiers executed in 1917–1918. The U.S. Army overturned the convictions of these soldiers in 2023 and granted them honorable discharges.
