Memorials Inventory Project (MIP)

PROGRESS REPORT, February 2003

As of February 2003, the count of identified memorials and monuments in our national cemeteries has climbed to 421. This number does not include the 169 cenotaphs at Congressional Cemetery where NCA oversees these historic markers. Of NCA’s 153 national cemeteries, soldier’s lots, and monument sites, 39 report having no monuments or memorials on site.

Since the Memorials Inventory Project began in spring 2002, more than 500 people have contacted NCA to participate in the project. To date, 136 registered volunteers have been assigned to 340 memorials. Documentation has been completed on 105 of those monuments or memorials by 56 volunteers. But, as of early February 2003, 79 monuments and memorials have yet to be assigned.

Anyone interested in volunteering to document the remaining cemetery monuments and memorials are invited to contact nca.memorials@va.gov for more information. They may also call (202) 565-5426 and listen to the message that provides updated availabilities of locations by state and city for memorials to survey.
