Indiana Receives Grant for Improvement of the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery

August 6, 2019

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that it has awarded Indiana a grant in the amount of $443,242 for the improvement of the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, Indiana.

"NCA's cemetery grant program has been a model for federal-state partnership in service to our Veterans for more than four decades," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Randy Reeves. "Without state Veterans cemeteries, we will not be able to achieve our strategic goal of providing Veterans with a burial option within 75 miles of their home."

This grant will fund the raising, realignment and cleaning of 1,216 upright headstones, and refurbishment of 80,100 sq. ft. of sod. The project will develop approximately 2.5 acres. This cemetery serves approximately 291,000 Veterans, their spouse and eligible family members.

The closest national cemetery is Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio, which is approximately 120 miles away.

The VA Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP) complements the 136 VA national cemeteries. Since its inception 41 years ago, the VCGP has awarded grants totaling more than $817 million to establish, expand, improve, or operate and maintain 115 state, territorial, and tribal Veterans cemeteries. These VA-funded cemeteries provided more than 39,000 burials in 2018.
