VA will continue its practice of honoring special requests for weekend burials for religious purposes, in cases of service members killed in action and on at least one day of any three-day Federal holiday weekend at all open VA national cemeteries. NCA will assess adding other options and national cemeteries in the future.

Currently, we accept casketed remains for in-ground burials and cremated remains for both in-ground and above-ground burials (columbarium).

Burial in a VA national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces who have met a minimum active duty service requirement and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

A Veteran's spouse, widow or widower, minor dependent children, and under certain conditions, unmarried adult children with disabilities may also be eligible for burial. Eligible spouses and children may be buried even if they predecease the Veteran.

Members of the reserve components of the armed forces who die while on active duty or who die while on training duty, or were eligible for retired pay, may also be eligible for burial.

Pikes Peak National Cemetery is a 374-acre Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) national cemetery located in the southeast portion of Colorado Springs. The cemetery will serve the burial needs of more than 95,000 Veterans, their spouses and eligible family members for the next 100 years.

The initial phase of construction developed approximately 65 acres and provide for approximately 13,300 gravesites, accommodating both casketed and cremated remains. In addition to gravesites, the cemetery includes other features such as a front entrance off Drennan Road, an administration building, a maintenance building, a flag pole assembly area, a memorial walkway, committal shelters, and a public information center with electronic gravesite locator and restrooms. Other cemetery infrastructure features will include roads, landscaping, utilities and irrigation.

The cemetery was officially dedicated on May 25, 2018 and the first burials took place on November 1, 2018 in the Early Turn-over Area (ETO) area of the cemetery.

We welcome and encourage fresh-cut flowers throughout the year and provide flower containers for gravesite display. Cemetery visitors are free to use the containers located in receptacles placed throughout the grounds. Once the blooms are spent or damaged by weather, they are removed. They also may be removed for routine mowing or other maintenance every Wednesday.

Artificial flowers are only allowed after the end of mowing operations in the fall on November 30 and must be removed when mowing resumes in the spring on March 15.

On Easter and Memorial Day, potted plants and artificial flowers may be placed on gravesites from the Thursday before the holiday until the following Wednesday. During the holiday season, from Thanksgiving through January 15, wreaths less than 18 inches in diameter and gravesite blankets may be placed on gravesites.

To maintain the dignity of the cemetery, commemorative items, balloons, pinwheels, glass items, votive lights, food, statues, shepherd's hooks, permanent plantings and items taller than the marble headstones among other items, are not permitted and will be removed immediately.

No item or object may be attached to a headstone or marker in a national cemetery.

Note: Pikes Peak National Cemetery has an abundance of wild life that may eat fresh flowers or arrangements.

In January 2014, VA purchased the land known as the Rolling Hills Ranch, located east of Marksheffel Road, between Bradley and Drennan Roads for $4.49 million. The property is located in El Paso County. In the spring of 2015, VA awarded AES Group, a service-disabled Veteran-owned small business architecture and engineering firm from Parker, Colorado, a contract to design the cemetery. The VA awarded a contract for construction of the cemetery in October 2017.
