VA Opens Cape Canaveral National Cemetery for First Burials

SCOTTSMOOR, FL - The Cape Canaveral National Cemetery opened for first interments of casketed or cremated remains of eligible Veterans, spouses or dependents, Wednesday, January 13, 2016. The cemetery hosted a private committal service for the family and friends of 12 deceased Veterans who received military honors on Tuesday, January 12, 2016, at 1:00 p.m.
The 318-acre cemetery in Brevard County will serve the burial needs of more than 163,000 Veterans in the cemetery's service area for the next 100 years. The land, located at 5525 U.S. Highway 1, between Huntington Avenue and Johns Road, was purchased in July 2012 for $2.1 million. The property is located approximately two miles south of Interstate 95, Exit #231, and approximately 12 miles north of Titusville.

About the National Cemetery Administration
Burial in a national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces, and Veterans who have met minimum active duty service requirements, and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Members of the reserve components of the armed forces who die while on active duty, while on training duty, or were eligible for retired pay, or were called to active duty and served the full term of service, may also be eligible for burial.
Their spouse, widow, or widower, minor children, and, under certain conditions, unmarried adult children with disabilities, may also be eligible for burial. Eligible spouses and children may be buried even if they predecease the Veteran.
