Alabama receives grant to expand Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort

November 2, 2022

WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) announced today that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program (VCGP), which it oversees, has awarded a grant of up to $5,174,322 to the state of Alabama for the expansion of Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort.

"The first interments for this cemetery began in April 2013," said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Matthew Quinn. "NCA is proud to help the state of Alabama continue to provide services to Veterans and their eligible family members."

Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery currently serves more than 56,000 Veterans and their eligible family members living within 75 miles of the cemetery. The grant will fund 1,756 pre-placed crypts, 960 columbarium niches, landscaping, and supporting infrastructure on approximately 2 acres of land.

Since its inception in 1978, the VCGP has provided more than $959 million to establish, expand, improve, operate and maintain 121 cemeteries in which Veterans are currently interred. In fiscal year 2021, these cemeteries conducted more than 45,000 burials.
