Key Messages

Leverage these key messages and incorporate into web content, materials, presentations, and social media messaging that your NCA facility or organization develops to promote VA burial and memorial benefits.

  • The role of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Cemetery Administration (NCA) is to ensure those who served this nation are never forgotten. VA operates more than 155 national cemeteries and maintains over 4 million graves to honor their memory, service, and sacrifice.

  • Planning with your loved ones in advance can reduce your family's stress at a difficult time. Whether choosing a VA national cemetery, VA grant-funded cemetery, or a private cemetery, VA burial and memorial benefits ensure you and your family receive the ceremony and remembrance you deserve.

  • Eligible Veterans have earned VA burial benefits at a VA national cemetery for themselves, their spouses, and qualifying family members.

  • Veterans and spouses who want to be buried in a VA national cemetery can apply to find out in advance if they are eligible.

  • Completing the simple, online pre-need burial eligibility application is the starting point in end-of-life planning with your family. It takes less than 10 minutes to fill out and could save your family thousands of dollars in burial costs.

  • Along with VA's national cemeteries, VA funds state, territorial, and tribal cemeteries, giving nearly 94% of Veterans living in the U.S. access to a Veterans cemetery within 75 miles of their home. This gives Veterans and their families more choices and ensures they receive the honor and remembrance they deserve.

  • VA provides funding to establish, expand, improve, and maintain more than 120 state, territorial, and tribal Veterans cemeteries in 47 states and 3 territories including Guam, Saipan, and Puerto Rico.

  • Veterans who want to be buried in a VA grant-funded cemetery should reach out to their desired cemetery for more information on their full range of burial benefits and eligibility.

  • If choosing burial in a private cemetery, Veterans are eligible for VA memorial benefits, including a government headstone, marker or medallion, a United States burial flag, and presidential certificates.

Leverage these key messages and incorporate into web content, materials, presentations, and social media messaging that your NCA facility or organization develops to promote VA burial and memorial benefits.

  • VA's Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) is the nation's largest digital platform dedicated to the memory of more than 10 million Veterans, and the site makes it easy to share, remember, and connect those experiences.

  • Every Veteran has a story — a legacy of courage, service, and sacrifice — that deserves to be remembered, not just today, but forever. The memorials that accompany a Veteran's life are an important legacy, so that family members, friends, and others can understand and appreciate the unique Veteran experience.

  • Family, friends, and the public can use Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) any time to search and find Veterans who have passed away and subsequently received a VA burial or memorial benefit. The interactive features allow users to submit tributes and memories to a Veteran's profile page along with images, biographical information, historical documents, and military and life timelines. Veteran profile pages can easily be shared by email and posted to social media.

  • Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) now offers the opportunity for Veterans to tell their military and life stories today, in their own words. VLM's new Living Veterans profile page is a way for Veterans to reminisce and share their stories while they are still living, in a way only they can tell.

  • The process of privately building a Living Veterans page is easy. Veterans can determine how they'd like to be remembered using Veterans Legacy Memorial's (VLM) simple content capture platform. Veterans can upload photos and historical documents, write their autobiography, and share military and life timelines.

  • After the Veteran passes away, if interred in a VA national or state, tribal or territorial Veterans cemetery, or if they receive a VA headstone or other memorial benefit, the content they've submitted will appear on their publicly visible Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM) page.

  • The Living Veterans feature is open to those Veterans who have been approved for pre-need eligibility for burial in a VA national cemetery. If you're a Veteran who hasn't applied, your first step is to apply for pre-need burial eligibility. If you've already applied and been approved, visit https://www.va.gov/remember/ to begin building your profile today. To learn more, visit VLM for Living Veterans.

Promotion of Access to VA Burial and Memorial Benefits

It is estimated that there are 4.4 million rural Veterans across the country. While this population has served with distinction, they have often faced unique barriers when it comes to accessing end-of-life services that honor their military service and legacy.

With VA's ongoing efforts to expand cemetery access, today 94% of Veterans in the United States live within 75 miles of a VA national cemetery or a VA grant-funded Veterans cemetery. Veterans also have access to some memorial benefits when choosing a private cemetery, giving Veterans and their families even more choices.

This outreach campaign highlights VA's burial and memorial benefits available to Veteran families living in rural communities and raises awareness of their earned benefits. The campaign's resources encourage Veteran families to explore the range of burial options available at VA national and grant-funded cemeteries.
